And what 2023 election results may signal for 2024

Good morning!

Democrats are celebrating most of Tuesday’s election results —hoping that a win on abortion in Ohio, holding the Kentucky governor’s mansion in a deep red state and dominant wins in purple Virginia indicate positive things for them next year. Pres. Biden is hoping to run on abortion, among other issues. That said, all politics is local and the Pres remains pretty unpopular.

Tuesday Winners in bold below:

Kentucky governor: Andy Beshear (D) vs. Daniel Cameron (R)

Ohio’s Issue One (a right to abortion enshrined in constitution): yes or no

Ohio’s Issue Two (legalizing weed): yes or no

Virginia’s state legislature: Democrats hold state senate and flip House.

Mississippi governor: Tate Reeves (R) vs. Brandon Presley (D)

Have a good one!

🗞 NEW POLLS HAVE TOP DEMS HOPING FOR BIDEN ALTERNATIVE

New polls are raising renewed concerns about President Biden’s re-election chances next year. A new CNN poll shows former President Donald Trump narrowly beating President Joe Biden, 49% to 45%, in a hypothetical rematch. It follows NY Times and CBS News polls out this weekend that also showed worrisome numbers for Democrats. Voters doubt Biden’s ability to lead — and some dems (including Obama-era strategist, David Axelrod) worry his team is ignoring warning signs and not course correcting.

THE DATA
Let’s start with the numbers that freaked some Democrats over the weekend. In a hypothetical presidential election, polling shows Trump wins five of the six swing states — Nevada, Georgia, Arizona, Michigan and Pennsylvania — while Biden would win Wisconsin. Biden won all six states narrowly in 2020, and this major shake-up would lead to Trump back in the White House.

76% of Americans believe the country is headed in the wrong direction and the leading Democratic and Republican candidates are broadly viewed unfavorably, according to a new ABC News/Ipsos poll.

👎️ Biden’s public approval rating is at 39% — the rating has held below 50% since August 2021, but this month's rating was close to the lowest levels of his presidency, 36%, seen in mid-2022.

The Biden camp is putting on a brave face — arguing that polls often paint a dire picture for incumbent presidents a year before the election and most voters are not tuned into politics right now. President Biden’s reelection campaign remains full speed ahead. FYI—Biden turns 81 years old on Nov. 20 (his age is a major concern for voters)

IS THERE A PLAN B?
The filing deadline for presidential state primaries in Nevada, New Hampshire and South Carolina have come and gone — which means it is too late to get new names onto those ballots. More deadlines follow soon.

The only official elected Democrat running against Biden: Rep. Dean Phillips, a Democrat from Minnesota. He’s a businessman who first was elected to Congress in 2018. Phillips announced he was running for president against Biden in late October, citing his belief that the commander in chief cannot win reelection. A poll released last week shows Phillips with only 4% of support among potential Democratic primary voters, the same as motivational speaker, Marianne Williamson, who’s still in the race.

GLIMMER OF HOPE FOR DEMS
Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. appears to take more support from Trump than Biden, a new poll found. In a head-to-head match-up the poll found Biden narrowly ahead of Trump by 1 point — 47% to 46%, within the margin of error.

MEANWHILE, THE REPUBLICANS DEBATE AGAIN TONIGHT
It’s the third presidential debate — and the third Trump has boycotted. Trump maintains dominant lead among 2024 GOP candidates as the field narrows. The debate takes place in Miami-Dade County, Florida, and will air from 8-10 p.m. ET on the TV and digital platforms of NBC News.

Five candidates met all party qualifying criteria:

  • Florida Governor Ron DeSantis

  • Businessman Vivek Ramaswamy

  • Former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley

  • South Carolina Senator Tim Scott

  • Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie
