📌 ONE YEAR LATER, HAMAS LEADER & 10/7 ARCHITECT KILLED
Israeli soldiers killed Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, the man behind the Oct. 7 terror massacre in Israel, on Wednesday in the southern Gaza city of Rafah.
The Israeli military had been hunting for Sinwar since Oct. 7 inside Gaza’s 140 square miles— the size of Philadelphia, PA— and Hamas’s vast underground system of 300 miles of tunnels.
Intelligence sources believed that he was living in the tunnels, using hostages as personal human shields, until recently.
THE OPERATION
Israeli military officials said Sinwar was one of three Hamas terrorists killed in an above-ground building during an operation near Rafah. He was not being directly targeted, and troops only realized that one of the three dead terrorists was apparently Sinwar when they took a closer look at the remains and noticed a resemblance.
With him: Weapons, passports, a lighter, and a UNRWA employee ID, the equivalent of $10,000 cash, and a pack of Mentos candy (which arrives via humanitarian aid.)
Not with him: Hostages. The IDF confirmed none of the remaining hostages were with Sinwar, and therefore none were harmed in the operation.
However, DNA found in the tunnels shows Sinwar was with the six hostages— including American Hersh Goldberg-Polin— who were executed in August. Israeli officials say he gave the direct order to kill the hostages as he fled the area, and has been on the run for the last two months.
Details: Israeli troops pursued three suspicious men going house to house on Wednesday afternoon in Rafah’s Tel Sultan neighborhood. An Israeli tank fired a shell at one of the buildings they entered. Sinwar responded by throwing two grenades, one of which exploded. The soldiers withdrew, and flew a drone (video above) to search the room.
Footage shows Sinwar sitting in a chair, covered in dust from the first shell attack. He watched the drone for at least 20 seconds before throwing a stick at it. Again, the Israelis had no idea who the man was at the time. An Israeli tank then fired another shell, killing Sinwar.
Sinwar’s body was taken back to Israel for dental and DNA analysis, confirming his identity.
Israel had Sinwar’s medical records because he spent 22 years in an Israeli prison for planning the abduction and murder of two Israeli soldiers and four Palestinians he believed were helping Israel.
Despite a life sentence, he was released in 2011 along with 1,026 Palestinians in a hostage exchange for one Israeli soldier.
Israel’s bin Laden: One way to think about Sinwar. As the architect of the deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust, Sinwar was seen as equivalent to Osama bin Laden in Israel. 10/7 is seen as Israel’s 9/11. Social media posts showed people around Israel cheering following the news.
NETANYAHU’S OFFER
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke directly to Gazans holding the remaining hostages following the news on Thursday.
“Hamas will no longer rule Gaza. To the Hamas terrorists, I say: Your leaders are fleeing and they will be eliminated.”
Netanyahu said that anyone in Gaza who is involved in holding the remaining 101 Israeli hostages will be allowed to live if they lay down their weapons and release their captives.
He offered “safe passage and a financial reward to those who return our hostages to us and ask to lay down their arms and leave the Strip."
REACTIONS
1,200 people were massacred on Oct. 7, including 43 Americans, and more than 250 taken hostage by Hamas. Four American hostages are thought to still be alive in Gaza.
The families of the American hostages released a statement: “It is now time for every single hostage held in Gaza to be returned to their families. No more delays and no more demands… seize this opportunity… before it is too late.”
Vice President Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden both congratulated Israel, and called on them to use this opportunity to get to a “day after” in Gaza without Hamas in power, “and for a political settlement that provides a better future for Israelis and Palestinians alike.”
Biden said: “Hamas is no longer capable of carrying out another October 7. Yahya Sinwar was an insurmountable obstacle to achieving all of those goals. That obstacle no longer exists.”
Harris also said that US intelligence has been used to help Israel track Hamas leaders since the start of the war, however Americans were not part of the operation yesterday.
WHAT’S NEXT
Over the last four months, Israel has decimated the leadership ranks of Hamas and Hezbollah. For Israel, the killing of Sinwar shows that it’s persistence in prosecuting the war on Hamas despite a high cost in lives, attacks from all sides, international condemnation and constant pressure to commit to a ceasefire with Hamas, is paying off.
In fact, Israeli government officials point out that it was President Biden and VP Harris who warned them last spring not to invade Rafah—the same place they have since found massive Hamas infrastructure, Israeli hostages, and on Thursday, Sinwar.
In July, Israel killed Hamas’s military chief, Mohammed Deif, in an airstrike. Later that same month, the group’s political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, was killed in an explosion at a military-run guesthouse in Tehran.
About 15,000 Hamas members and fighters (about half the group) have been killed in Gaza.
Israel has also decimated the Hezbollah terror group in Lebanon in recent months, as it seeks to push back that Iranian-supported proxy away from its northern border. Hezbollah has vowed to now escalate its war in the aftermath of Sinwar’s death.
Speculation is now that Sinwar’s brother Mohammed is next in line to take over the terror group.
Bottom line: While Israelis are celebrating the news, the war is not over and the remaining hostages are not home. Gaza is in shambles with about 40,000+ dead, Israel is still in a major battle against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon and still has not conducted a counterstrike after Iran’s ballistic missile attack last month. Israel views Iran, particularly an Iran with potential nuclear weapons, as the bigger, existential threat.
This is not the end of the war. But we’ll see if this is at least the beginning of the end.
