  • The show has featured other American gymnasts — Shawn Johnson, Aly Raisman, Nastia Liukin, Laurie Hernandez and Simone Biles (with Johnson and Hernandez winning their seasons), but Nedoroscik will be the first male gymnast.

📌 HARRIS OUTLINES VISION FOR AMERICA, DRAWS CONTRASTS TO TRUMP

Vice President Kamala Harris said she could unite the country in her acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention on Thursday, painting former President Trump as an “unserious man” whose reelection poses serious consequences for America. In just under 40 minutes, she told her origin story, outlined her policy agenda, and warned America about the perils of returning Trump to the White House.

"I promise to be a president for all Americans. You can always trust me to put country above party and self, to hold sacred America's fundamental principles, from the rule of law, to free and fair elections, to the peaceful transfer of power," she said.

HOW HARRIS GOT HERE
Harris started the night with her mother's story. A young immigrant from India who came to the US to study breast cancer and stayed for the American dream. She said a core value her mother instilled in her was to “never complain about injustice, but do something about it.”

  • Harris told a heart-wrenching story of her childhood friend facing sexual abuse by her stepfather was what led the VP to a career in law. She was elected DA of San Francisco in 2003 and later served as Attorney General of California from 2010-2017

HER AGENDA
Harris entered the race in late July after Biden’s withdrawal, and is now starting to lay out what her presidency might look like. This is a bit of what she outlined on Thursday night:

  • Economy: Harris vowed to build the middle class with an “opportunity economy,” starting with a tax cut that will impact 100 million Americans. She contrasted her plan with Trump’s tax cut proposal, which she argued would benefit the rich and add to the national debt.

  • Foreign policy: “I will ensure America ... has the strongest, most lethal fighting force,” Harris said, outlining her national security and foreign policy experience.

    • Harris reaffirmed her commitment to NATO, drawing a comparison to Trump who has criticized the alliance, and vowed to support Ukraine’s fight.

    • On Israel, Harris stayed with the Biden administration’s commitment to ensuring the security of Israel and that hostage and cease-fire deals need to be made. However, she also sent a forceful message that “what has happened in Gaza in the last 10 months is devastating, so many innocent lives lost,” and that “The scale of suffering is heartbreaking.”

Border: Harris pledged to bring back the bipartisan border security bill that Trump pushed Republicans to reject this past year. Harris has received criticism from the right on immigration policy—one of the issues she was assigned to deal with by President Biden in 2021.

  • Gun violence: In one of the most emotional moments of the night, five people impacted by gun violence told their stories. Kamala Harris has promised to take on the gun lobby and enact gun reform measures so that Americans can have "freedom from gun violence."

  • Abortion: “We trust women,” Harris said, adding that she will sign into law a bill to “restore reproductive freedom.” She said Trump and his allies are "out of their minds" for limiting access to abortion, birth control and other reproductive care.

  • Democracy: Harris referred to the US as the "greatest democracy in the history of the world” and called on voters to stand up on behalf of future generations.

    • She noted the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and the Freedom to Vote Act as legislation she would want to sign in office.

    • She said that dictators are “rooting for Trump.”

Harris stuck to the script, hitting around the 35-minute mark that was planned. Trump’s RNC speech broke records at 92 minutes and veered into his typical campaign rally rhetoric after the scripted remarks.

  • On the ground, Puck News reporter Tara Palmeri told Mo News that the vibes between the RNC and DNC are similar. Both parties are excited about their candidate. There are now 74 days until election day.

HIGH ENERGY
Democratic activists at the convention told Mo News that they are extremely excited about Harris, and the prospects of potentially winning in November. The Biden candidacy had many resigned to losing in the fall.

For the first three nights, the DNC has also been getting higher viewership than the RNC.

Trump appears to be feeling the pressure. During Harris’s speech, he posted on social media about 40 times. Many of his comments contained his typical name-calling. He did repeatedly claim that he has “nothing to do with Project 2025,” which she invoked several times.

UP NEXT
We need to learn more about her views. Harris has not done a sit-down interview with any journalist since declaring her candidacy just over a month ago — she has committed to one by August 31.

  • The next big event: The presidential debate. ABC News will moderate the debate in Philadelphia on Tuesday, Sept. 10, at 9 pm ET.
