Good afternoon,

This again? I feel like every time March rolls around, we re-engage in the hotly-debated question of whether or not we should abolish daylight saving time.

As someone who cherishes her 8 hours of beauty rest, I am dreading this weekend when we “spring” the clocks forward – even if it means an extra hour of evening sun.

  • I guess I’m not alone? Jennifer Martin, former president of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, says losing an hour of sleep isn’t just a nuisance, it can actually be detrimental to our health. That’s because most Americans are already sleep deprived.

    • Health impacts of daylight saving: When the clock is set to standard time (November – March), the daylight hours are more aligned with our circadian rhythms, or internal clock. When we switch to daylight saving time (March – November), it “actually alters the relationship between our internal clock and the external environment,” says Martin.

  • Unfortunately, there’s no life hack for acclimating to the time change. Martin suggests just being kind to yourself and accepting the adjustment period (and hoping your boss will accept it, too).

In the meantime, I’ll be getting to bed early these next couple of nights to prep… zzz

🚨 ONE THING THAT CHANGED

No Need To Hoard Avocados: Most Tariffs On Mexico & Canada Suspended By Trump

Trade Whiplash. Again. Just two days after issuing new tariffs, President Donald Trump on Thursday imposed yet another one-month delay on numerous Mexican and Canadian products covered by the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). The USMCA is the free trade treaty that Trump negotiated during his first term.

  • The USMCA covers about 50% of the $505 billion in goods Mexico ships to the U.S. annually, and covers 38% of the $412 billion in goods Canada sends our way. This reprieve is meant to ensure that prices remain relatively steady for those goods — especially grocery store staples. Though, tariffs will still cover about half of the products sent our way.

  • Trump first announced his plans to tariff Canada and Mexico in January. This is now the second time he has put a 30-day delay in place.

HOW WE GOT HERE
The 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada, which went into effect Tuesday, initially would have impacted all products imported from both countries. After stocks plunged in response to the news, the White House announced on Wednesday that USMCA-compliant automakers would be exempt from tariffs for a month.

By Thursday morning, with the markets still down, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said more relief was coming. Lutnick attributed that to both Canadian and Mexican officials’ work to secure the border and stop the flow of fentanyl into the U.S.

  • In response, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum thanked Trump and said, “We will continue to work together, particularly on migration and security issues, which include reducing the illegal crossing of fentanyl into the United States, as well as weapons into Mexico.”

The Trump administration has said that full 25% tariffs will eventually go into effect April 2 — when reciprocal tariffs against all nations are set to take effect — unless Mexico makes substantial progress in addressing fentanyl trafficking into the U.S.

PROGRESS ON FENTANYL?
While Canada accounts for less than 1% of fentanyl crossing into the U.S., Mexico accounts for 98%. In the five months since Sheinbaum’s been in office, Mexican authorities have seized about as much of the drug as it did in the entire previous year. They’ve also arrested 900 members of the powerful Sinaloa Cartel, began sending the U.S. “wanted” cartel operatives, and dispatched hundreds of troops to bust labs making the powerful synthetic opioid.

  • It’s reportedly led cartel leaders to scale back fentanyl production and go into hiding.

  • Still, cartel members warn that Americans’ insatiable appetite for the drug — and how easy it is to synthesize — means the product isn’t likely to disappear completely.

🚨 ONE THING THAT NEEDS MORE CONTEXT

Trump Plans To Dismantle Education Department: What To Expect

President Donald Trump is expected to sign an executive order soon instructing Secretary of Education Linda McMahon to begin dismantling the agency she is in charge of running. The Education Department has thousands of employees and a roughly $240 billion annual budget.

  • On Thursday, the White House Press Secretary said it was not happening today, calling such reports “fake news.” The administration was reportedly concerned about blowback to the executive order and a lack of prepared messaging, as its opponents have threatened lawsuits.

  • Trump has been calling for an end to the department for years — even saying McMahon should “put herself out of a job.” He campaigned on dismantling the department, which was created in 1979 by an act of Congress. Long story short, it would officially take an act of Congress to also close it.

WHAT DEPT. DOES
The agency oversees Title IX rules, which dictate how schools respond to sexual misconduct, and enforces Title VI violations, which prohibit discrimination based on race, color, or national origin in programs or activities that receive federal financial assistance. The agency’s biggest job is running the $1.6 trillion federal student loan program. More than half of all undergraduates participate in it.

  • The Education Department also oversees national achievement tests, funds low-income schools, and collects data on enrollment, crime, and staffing. Most federal financial support to K-12 schools goes toward supporting low income students and those with disabilities.

  • Reminder: About 90% of K-12 funding comes from states and local governments, which also oversees school districts’ curricula.

WHAT TRUMP CAN DO
Trump has the power to make some major changes, including cutting staff, closing programs, rolling-back protections for LGBTQ students, and establishing a federal, universal school choice program. But actually closing the agency, or folding it into another agency, is going to be much harder.

  • Trump needs congressional approval and a filibuster-proof supermajority of 60 votes in the Senate to eliminate the agency. Democrats support the department, and the Republicans’ 53-seat Senate majority is not enough. Even some GOP Senators have expressed skepticism about getting rid of it.

In Trump’s first term, he proposed merging the education and labor departments. His then-Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos argued for less money from Congress to try to dismantle the department, but lawmakers mostly kept spending intact.
